Higgins Beach, shown in this photo at low tide, is located in the town of Scarborough Maine. This North/South trending beach is .6 miles long and is only 7 miles from Portland, Maine. In 1897 the three-masted Howard W. Middleton ship carrying 894 tons of Pennsylvania coal run aground. All crew members made it safely to shore. Most of the cargo was saved, although it is said some of Higgins Beach locals salvaged enough coal for three years of winters. Portland, Outdoor, Scarborough Maine, Portland Maine

Along Cape Cod in Massachusetts, saltwater marshes line the coast with stretches of lush green grass divided by winding blue water. Salt marshes act as natural purifiers by filtering pollutants and sediment and by absorbing excess nutrients from streams, rivers and surface runoffs before they can reach coastal waters and drinking water supplies. Check out the Association to Preserve Cape Cod to donate or volunteer. Rivers, Saltwater, Coast

People have used windmills for thousands of years, but for the past ten years their numbers have been increasing around the globe, as they are a popular source of renewable energy. According to the Energy Information Agency, the average US household uses 888 kWh per month, or 10,656 kWh per year. An average a single 1.5-MW turbine (26.9% capacity factor) would produce the same amount of electric energy as that used by almost 332 households over a year.
