The original gilded decoration of the dome was lost as a result of damp penetration in the 1940s. It was regilded in 2010 as part of the major refurbishment. During the course of this work, the original stencil decoration was uncovered and has been recreated as you see it today. #London #LondonDaysOut #HistoricHouse #Office #Dress #History #HollandPark #Inspiration #InteriorDesign #HistoricInterior #InteriorsOfInstagram #GardenInspiration #OldHouse #VictorianHouse #leightonhouse #westlondon Refurbishment, Decoration, Design, Garden Design, Inspiration, London, Museums, House Museum, Victorian Homes

Most of the tiles in the Arab Hall were produced in Damascus in the late 16th century and acquired by Lord Leighton during a series of visits to the Middle East. During a visit to Damascus in 1873 Leighton was helped by the Reverend William Wright, a missionary an amateur archaeologist who spoke Arabic And knew the city well. They sort out the textiles, tiles and objects and according to Wright “Leighton was able to lay the foundations of his fine collection” #London #LondonDaysOut #Historic Moorish, Middle East, Circular Table, Tiles

Lord Leighton visited Egypt on more than one occasion and it was here that he acquired the pierced screens that are displayed over both windows in the Arab hall and the overhanging box window above your head. These are called mashrabiyyas and each screen is assembled from many individual pieces of hand turned pinewood #London #LondonDaysOut #HistoricHouse #Office #Dress #History #HollandPark #Inspiration #InteriorDesign #HistoricInterior #InteriorsOfInstagram #GardenInspiration #OldHouse Old House

The stuffed peacock on the stairs at this gorgeous house encapsulates the feel of the interior. Quirky, richly coloured and exotic. In this very grand house, with the most beautiful furnishings from this eclectic collector, Lord Leighton, sits a bit of whimsy in this taxidermy Peacock. The hallway, in which it states, is covered in the most beautiful deep blue turquoise, almost peacock blue tiles. The Peacock presides over the space and for me, firmly roots the space in the Victorian love of all things natural history. #London #LondonDaysOut #HistoricHouse #Office #Dress #History #HollandPark #Inspiration #InteriorDesign

Lord Leighton wanted a house that could reflect his new-found standing in an ever increasing artistic Victorian world. Lord Leighton wanted to leave his calling card in a time when Victorian art was booming. As the new president of the Royal Academy, he created the wonderful collection at Leighton House to expose himself as a gentleman, collector, artist and professional man. He lived here alone in the house and occupied it’s only bedroom. Simple in its design, the only real furniture in the space aside from the bed is this beautiful inlaid marquetry chest of drawers. #London #LondonDaysOut #HistoricHouse Gentleman, Marquetry, Ideas, Home

I love this hugely proportioned mirror in the fairly (by comparison) simple morning room. The fireplace takes up one third of the wall space, was the mirror dominates. The house is so well preserved it feels as if Leighton has only just stepped into the garden for some fresh air. This is due to painstaking restoration work between 2008 and 2010 when the house had fallen into disrepair. When Leighton died in 1896, the contents of the house including his entire art collection was sold by his two sisters, but important pieces of furniture and paintings have since gradually being returned. #London #LondonDaysOut #HistoricHouse #Office #Dress #History #HollandPark Fresh, Home Décor

Just the most exquisite mosaic flooring. Even though it’s monochrome palette is simple, the intricacy of the pattern is breathtaking. The beautiful windows allow for even more pattern from the sunlight as it falls across the space. Just going to show how atmospheric shadows can be in any space, and should never be forgotten. #Shadows #London #LondonDaysOut #HistoricHouse #Office #Dress #History #HollandPark #Inspiration #InteriorDesign #HistoricInterior #InteriorsOfInstagram #GardenInspiration Tile Patterns, Flooring

The Arab Hall is simply stunning. It Such a garden courtyard feel to it. As huge domed ceiling, and walls lined with decorative tiles. It is truly breathtaking. It was constructed following Lord Leighton’s trip to the Middle East during the late 1800s. Leighton House was built in increments from 1865 not just as a place to live and paint, but also as a stage on which Lord Leighton could act out the newly dignified role of artist. With the Victorian art market booming, and questions of the domestic taste pressing hard on the middle classes, Leighton needed a space where he could demonstrate his position as both President of the Royal academy and chief exponent of the new aesthetism in painting and design. #London #LondonDaysOut #HistoricHouse England
