The Conservancy teamed up with collaborators from NC State University to apply satellite tags to five of our BHI alligators. Alligators can be good indicators of environmental effects on immune function, as they normally have robust immune systems and are almost constantly exposed to fresh water. We hope to be able to address the many questions about alligators with the help of this navi(gator) technology. *permitted by NC Wildlife Resource Commission

Our Wilson's Plover nest on West Beach has successfully hatched! 🐣 We now have two tiny, cute chicks running around with their parents. In these photos, you can see just how well the Wilson's Plovers blend in with the beach! We ask visitors to please be mindful of our new feathered friends while out on the beach and to keep dogs leashed in this area!
What's the buzz?🐝 Our preservation of BHI starts with the mighty pollinator, who works un-bee-lievably hard in helping our ecosystems grow strong each spring! 🌼 Grow Strong, Bee, Animals, Hard

"Why did the turtle cross the road?" asks one Yellow-Bellied slider to the other. "...to get to the other side, of course!" 🐢 With spring officially here, we can expect to see a lot more wildlife on Bald Head Island! Spring is hatching season for terrestrial and freshwater turtles, such as our Box Turtles and Yellow-Bellied Sliders. Yellow Bellied Slider, Freshwater Turtles, Box Turtle, Bald Heads, Baby Turtles

Bald Head Island has six known species of frogs and toads! Frogs are an indicator species on how well an ecosystem is doing and are important for controlling insect populations. With spring in full swing and summer on its way, more of our cold natured friends are coming out to enjoy the warm weather. Keep an ear out! You may be able to hear frogs calling in the maritime forest, around the golf course, or in your own front yard.

Check out some of the wildlife that our "Keep a Peep Out for Buntings" group spotted this past weekend. We successfully found one of our BHI famous Painted Buntings on Middle Island, and we met some anoles and egrets along the way! Thank you to the “peeps” who joined us!

Have you seen any signs of spring around the island? We've spotted cloudless sulphur butterflies, bumblebees, and lilacs on our campus! 🌼 Sulphur, Spring Sign, Tours, Lilacs

Missing out on the fall leaves? Thankfully, there are still plenty of colors to see around Bald Head Island this time of year. 🦋 Be on the lookout for shades of red, yellow, and orange floating through the air or nestled in the bushes outside of Old Baldy courtesy of our migrating gulf fritillaries, cloudless sulphurs, and monarchs.
