A ampulheta ou relógio de areia é um instrumento de medição do tempo de invenção relativamente recente. A primeira ilustração conhecida é um fresco italiano datado de 1337 ou 1339, que se encontra no Palazzo Pubblico em Siena. Mostra-nos uma forma de vidro, com dois balões em cima um do outro, unidos pelos gargalos. Um diafragma com um pequeno furo, no meio, limitava o fluxo dos grãos de areia que iam passando de um para o outro dos balões.
