In the 12th century Malachy of Armagh (later St. Malachy) became aware of two new monastic orders in France, the Cistercians and the Cannons Regular of St. Augustine and he decided to introduce both orders to Ireland in an effort to reform the old Irish church which, both morally and organizationally, had fallen out of line with much of the rest of Christian Europe. St James Abbey, Bavaria, Germany    The monks at St. James's were all Irish or Scottish until 1497, when their number dwindled to one or two. The abbey was then given over to German monks, and in 1506 was united with the Bursfeld Congregation. From 1506–16 Johannes Trithemius was its abbot. Gougane Barra (Irish: Guagán Barra, meaning "the rock of Barra")[1] is a settlement, west of Macroom in County Cork, Ireland.  The name Gougane Barra comes from Saint Finbarr, who is said to have built a monastery on an island in the lake nearby during the 6th century. St. Ruadhán (died 584 AD) mac Fergusa Birn (also kown as Rowan/Ruan and Rodan).  Irish Christian abbot who founded the monastery of Lorrha (Lothra, County Tipperary, Ireland), near Terryglass. He was known for his prophesies. After his death, he was venerated as a saint and as one of the "Twelve Apostles of Ireland" who studied at Clonard under the preceptorship of Finnian. He is said to have administered the viaticum to Finnian when he was dying because of the plague. He founded the celebrated monastery of Tirdaglas (Tir-da-glasí),or Terryglass in 548.
